Ubuki Park is a vast urban park spanning 48.9 hectares at the foot of Mt. Ubuki in Kurayoshi, Tottori Prefecture. It is celebrated as one of Japan's top 100 most beautiful cherry blossom spots and one of the top 100 urban parks, making it a representative scenic destination in the San'in region. The park features a variety of attractions including beautiful ponds, observation decks, an animal plaza, and historical structures, allowing visitors to experience both nature and history simultaneously.
The history of this park dates back to 1904. The landscaping began when the future Emperor Taisho, who was the Crown Prince at the time, visited the San'in region and stayed at this location. The park houses the "Hiryokaku" pavilion, a structure that preserves this history and is designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. The site also holds significant modern Japanese history, having hosted visits by Emperor Showa in 1947.
The park offers diverse charms throughout the seasons. It is particularly famous in spring when approximately 4,000 cherry trees and 40,000 azalea bushes bloom in a spectacular display of color. The "Fureai Animal Plaza" (Animal Interaction Area) is a favorite for both children and adults to enjoy close contact with animals. Other highlights include walking paths around the ponds, an observation deck with panoramic views, and architectural sites that evoke a sense of history.
The most recommended time to visit is spring (roughly March to May) when the cherry blossoms and azaleas are in full bloom. During this period, the park is transformed into a vibrant, colorful landscape and becomes very lively. You can enjoy different botanical expressions depending on the season. We recommend visiting during daylight hours to fully enjoy the scenery around the ponds, observation deck, and animal plaza.
The primary way to enjoy the park is through leisurely strolls across its expansive grounds. The animal plaza makes it an ideal destination for families with children or groups looking for an interactive experience. Visitors can also spend a relaxing time admiring the historical architecture and the natural scenery.
The area surrounding the park preserves the historical atmosphere of Kurayoshi. The adjacent "Ubuki Tamagawa" area is a designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, making it a wonderful place for a walk. The park also serves as a central hub for the local community, with the Kurayoshi City Hall located nearby.
