TUNNEL OF LIGHT (Kiyotsu-kyo Tunnel) is a space that redefines the landscape of Kiyotsu-kyo in Niigata Prefecture as a work of art. The structure is composed of a massive concrete framework, stainless steel walls, and a water-covered floor. The most striking feature is the mirror-finish reflection. The surrounding nature, the sky, and the visitors themselves are reflected in the polished walls and water, creating a unique space where reality and reflection merge. It is a highly artistic spot where architectural beauty meets the changing colors of the seasons.
Originally, this area was a natural gorge along the Kiyotsu River, known for its rugged rock faces and beautiful scenery. While it was once a place for simple observation, a pedestrian-only tunnel was constructed for safety. In 2018, as part of the 'Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale,' the space was transformed into an art piece by Chinese artist Ma Yansong (MAD Architects). This renovation evolved the site from a simple scenic walkway into a profound artistic space where nature and architecture engage in a dialogue, garnering significant attention from both domestic and international visitors.
The greatest highlight is the 'Tunnel of Light' located at the second observation point inside the tunnel. Looking through the circular openings, the surrounding greenery, rock faces, and sky are reflected on the mirrored walls, creating a sense of infinite depth. Because the floor is covered in water, the sky and scenery are reflected symmetrically, creating a breathtaking sight. You can enjoy different expressions depending on the season: the vibrant greens of early summer, the rich colors of autumn foliage, and the striking contrast between white snow and blue skies in winter.
Kiyotsu-kyo offers a completely different face depending on when you visit. From spring to summer, you can enjoy the vivid greenery and the refreshing sensation of the clear stream. In autumn, the surrounding trees turn into brilliant colors, deepening the reflections. In winter, the contrast between the snow-covered rugged rocks and the clear blue sky adds a silvery, ethereal beauty to the mirrored world. Visiting during daylight hours is recommended, as natural light enters the tunnel, creating the most vivid and spectacular light displays.
