Morioka Tsugami Onsen is a beautiful hot spring area located on the shores of Lake Gosho in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture. The area is characterized by the tranquil waters of the dammed lake and the harmonious natural scenery surrounding it. The spring water is a simple sulfur spring with a high alkalinity (pH 8.7–9.5) and a rich flow of 2,000 liters per minute. The area features a variety of accommodations, day-service facilities, and wellness centers, making it a deeply rooted community-based hot spring destination.
The history of this area dates back to the late Heian period. Legend has it that during the Zenkunen War, the famous warrior Minamoto no Yoshiie discovered the hot springs while setting up his camp. The name "Tsugami" (meaning to tie or tether) is derived from the "Tsugami-ishi" (Tethering Stone), a stone with a hole in it where his beloved horse was reportedly tied to rest during the campaign.
The hot spring town is home to Onsen Jinja (Onsen Shrine/Yakushi Shrine), where traditional rituals are held every year on September 8th. Visitors can also enjoy several free footbath (ashiyu) spots while strolling along the scenic Lake Gosho. Notable spots include the "Yamaichi Te-yu" (completed in 2007) and the "Nekoishi Ashiyu" (completed in 2009), allowing travelers to easily experience the benefits of the hot springs during a walk. Additionally, from May to November, the local "Ichi-no-ichi" market is held on the 1st of every month, offering a wonderful chance to touch local culture.
The scenery around Lake Gosho changes beautifully with the seasons. You can observe the vibrant landscapes of spring blossoms, the lush greenery of summer, the brilliant autumn foliage, and the serene snowy landscapes of winter. Please note that operating hours for footbaths and local facilities vary, so it is recommended to check the specific information for each facility before your visit.
In addition to bathing at local accommodations, you can enjoy a "footbath tour" using the free public footbaths such as Nekoishi and Ochiai. While walking along the shores of Lake Gosho, you can enjoy a magnificent view of Mount Iwate. The area is also rich in cultural heritage, including the legendary "Tsugami-ishi" stone.
Several sightseeing spots are located around Lake Gosho. Morioka Tezukuri Mura (Handicraft Village), Koiwai Farm, and Gosho Wide-area Park are all nearby, making this area an excellent base for your Iwate sightseeing journey.
