Tsushima Jinja is a unique shrine situated on a small island off the coast of Mino-cho, Mitoyo City, Kagawa Prefecture. The most enchanting feature of this site is the appearance of a temporary bridge connecting the mainland to the island, which is only erected two days a year during the Summer Grand Festival on August 4th and 5th. The sight of a path leading to a sacred island floating in the middle of the sea is incredibly mystical and photogenic. Additionally, the shrine is widely revered as a deity that protects the health and growth of children, making it a popular destination for families.
Tsushima Jinja is dedicated to the deity Tsushima-no-kami, a god associated with the sea. According to ancient legends, the deity was enshrined on this island following a divine oracle from the ocean. Because of this profound connection between nature and spirituality, the site has been carefully preserved as a sacred space. The Summer Grand Festival serves as a vital cultural event, bringing many visitors together to witness and celebrate these ancient traditions in a modern setting.
The absolute highlight is the temporary bridge that appears during the Summer Grand Festival (August 4th and 5th). For most of the year, the shrine remains an isolated island, but the appearance of this path creates a truly unforgettable spectacle. Visitors can also enjoy stunning views of the ocean surrounding the main shrine building, where the harmony of natural beauty and sacred architecture is on full display. Within the shrine grounds, you can also experience the local culture of receiving amulets (omamori) at the amulet office.

During this period, the atmosphere is vibrant from early morning until late at night as the bridge is in place. The scenery becomes especially magical after dark when the lights are turned on. Even outside of the festival, a clear sunny day is recommended to enjoy the striking contrast between the blue sky and the sea. During the festival, spectacular fireworks displays are sometimes held after 8:00 PM on August 4th.
During the Summer Grand Festival, you can enjoy the rare experience of walking across the temporary bridge to reach the island—a sensation of walking over the sea that is only possible during this specific window. You can also spend a peaceful moment admiring the beautiful coastal scenery. The area surrounding Tsushima Jinja features the stunning coastline of Mitoyo City. It is conveniently located near other famous landmarks such as Chichibugahama Beach (often called the 'Maldives of Japan'), making it an easy and beautiful addition to a coastal driving route or a regional travel itinerary.
Please dress respectfully when visiting the shrine. Because you will be walking across a temporary bridge to reach the island during the festival, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Note that a bridge crossing fee of 300 JPY is required to access the main shrine area; please prepare small change in advance for a smooth experience. As the area becomes very crowded during the festival, please allow plenty of time for your visit.
