Tsurugasaki Coast, also known as the Shidashita Point, is located in Ichinomiya Town, Chiba Prefecture. Having been selected as an official venue for the surfing events at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, it is highly regarded by the global surfing community. Tsurugasaki Coast is the stage for the "Kazusa Jisha Festival," one of the oldest and most prestigious "Hamaori" (sea-descending) rituals in the Boso region. This traditional event is believed to have originated in the year 807 (the second year of the Daido era), boasting a history of over 1,200 years. Registered as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Chiba Prefecture, the festival is held every September. The landscape is deeply etched with the stories of gods descending to the shore, a tradition that continues to be honored today.
The primary draw is the world-class surfing environment that hosted Olympic-level competition. Visitors can witness high-level riding during major international events, such as the "QS6000 ICHINOMIYA CHIBA OPEN." Additionally, in September, you can witness the breathtaking sight of the traditional festival, where over 2,500 people gather to celebrate the ancient rituals, offering a profound glimpse into Japanese heritage.
While the coast offers excellent wave quality year-round, the character of the ocean changes with the seasons.
