Tsurigane-do is a stunning natural scenic spot located along the Kosode Coast in Kuji City, Iwate Prefecture. The coastline is defined by dramatic cliffs and rocky reefs, showcasing a rugged landscape shaped by the elements. The name "Tsurigane-do" (meaning "Bell Cave") originates from a legend that a bell-shaped rock once hung from the cave's ceiling. Today, it is most famous for its massive natural hollow, a masterpiece of natural architecture.
This region is a representative scenic area of the Northern Sanriku Coast. The landscape has been shaped by the powerful forces of nature over centuries, including the historical impact of the Great Meiji Tsunami in 1896. The cave holds deep significance as a place of natural wonder, particularly during the summer solstice, when the alignment of the sun and the cave's opening creates a spiritual and awe-inspiring display of light.
The greatest draw is the spectacular light show within the cave. Specifically around the summer solstice in June, the rising sun on the horizon aligns perfectly with the cave's opening, casting a mystical light through the interior. Another nearby highlight is "Kabuto-iwa" (Helmet Rock), a unique rock formation shaped like a samurai helmet. Located just across from the cave, this striking landmark is an essential part of the coastal scenery.
The summer solstice in June is the most significant time to visit. If you arrive in the early morning during this period, you may witness the breathtaking sight of the sun rising from the horizon and shining directly through the cave's opening. Additionally, from July to August, the coastline is beautified by the blooming of "Skashiyuri" (Lilium auratum), adding splashes of orange to the natural landscape.
Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls through this natural landscape. The shoreline is covered in beautiful pebbles, making it a peaceful place to enjoy the coastal atmosphere. Whether you are marveling at the light piercing through the cave or observing the unique shapes of the surrounding rock formations, the area offers a profound sense of connection with nature.
The area surrounding Tsurigane-do is part of the beautiful Kosode Coast. The driving route via National Route 45 and Prefectural Road 268 (Noda-Ouchi Line) offers scenic views of the ocean. It is highly recommended to visit Kabuto-iwa nearby to compare the different natural rock formations created by the sea.
As this is a natural coastal area, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes or sneakers. The roads leading to the area can be narrow and winding, so please drive with caution. Because the cave and coastline are in their natural state, please be mindful of your footing and respect the environment during your visit.
