Tsukui Castle is a historic mountain castle site located in Sagamihara City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Today, the area is maintained as the "Tsukui-ko Joyama Park," creating a beautiful space where ancient fortifications and lush nature coexist. The site is characterized by its visible defensive structures, such as earthen embankments (dorui), dry moats (horikiri), and stone foundations, allowing visitors to visually grasp the strategic layout of a traditional Japanese castle. Near the summit, you will find Iinuma Shrine, where you can enjoy the serene atmosphere and historical scenery.
The origins of Tsukui Castle are said to date back to the Kamakura period, founded by the Tsui clan. During the Sengoku (Warring States) period, it served as a vital strategic point connecting Kai and Odawara, under the control of the powerful Hojo clan. In 1590, during the Siege of Odawara, the castle surrendered following an attack by Tokugawa forces, after which it came under the direct control of the Tokugawa shogunate.
