Tsukigase Bairin is a nationally designated scenic spot located in Nara City, Nara Prefecture. While the landscape changed following the completion of the Takayama Dam, the area now offers a stunning vista where the waters of the Satsuki River harmonize perfectly with ancient and newly cultivated plum trees. With approximately 10,000 plum trees in full bloom, it is a premier destination for visitors during the spring season. In 1975, it was also designated as part of the Nara Prefectural Tsukigase Konomoyama Natural Park.
The history of this land is deeply rooted in tradition. Legend has it that in 1205, plum trees were planted to honor Sugawara no Michizane upon the establishment of Tenjin Shrine at Shinfuku-ji Temple. A centerpiece of this area is the 'Tosen no Ume,' an ancient plum tree estimated to be over 600 years old, which is a designated cultural property of the former Tsukigase Village. Historically, the area was famous for producing 'Ume' (unrefined plum-related products) and grew various wild species. When the Takayama Dam was completed in 1969, many trees were transplanted to protect the grove from being submerged, creating the beautiful landscape seen around the Tsukigase Lake today. Notably, the 'Tsukigase Bairin' was one of the first sites designated as a scenic spot by the Japanese government in 1922.

The peak season for Tsukigase Bairin is in March, during the blooming of the plum blossoms. During this time, the sight of roughly 10,000 blossoms surrounding the waters of the reservoir created by the dam is truly spectacular. To witness the full transformation of the landscape, a visit in early spring is highly recommended.
Visitors primarily enjoy walking through the natural scenery. You can stroll along the banks of the Satsuki River or through the well-maintained paths of the plum grove, observing the historical monuments and natural features. After your walk, many visitors enjoy relaxing at nearby facilities such as 'Tsukigase Onsen' or 'Romtopia Tsukigase' to unwind.
The area is rich with historical sites and natural parks. Nearby, you can find the 'Former Yagyu Clan Jinya' and 'Former Yagyu Clan Elder Residence,' which offer a glimpse into the history of the Yagyu domain. For those interested in seasonal flowers, the 'Yagyu Iris Garden' is also a wonderful nearby destination. The Tsukigase Momono area further expands the experience of exploring a natural park setting.
