Tsugizakura-oji is a vital Oji (shrine/resting point) located in Nonaka, Nakahechi, within Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture. This site is deeply connected to the legend of the 'Hisanezakura' (Hisane Cherry Blossom), which gives the area its unique identity. The most striking feature is the 'Nonaka Ipposugi,' a massive, towering cedar tree that commands presence and creates a profound sense of awe. As a key waypoint on the Kumano Kodo Nakahechi pilgrimage route, it offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and historical depth.
The area is steeped in the legend of the 'Hisanezakura.' According to historical records such as the 'Kinango Doki,' the name and the landscape have evolved over centuries. When the original ancient tree at the front of the Oji died, it was replanted with mountain cherry trees by order of the Kishu clan's lord. Furthermore, after the tree was damaged during a major flood in 1889, it was replanted in its current location. This site serves as a living testament to how nature and human history are intertwined.
The primary attraction is the 'Nonaka Ipposugi,' a giant cedar tree that stands as a symbol of the site alongside the legend of the Hisanezakura. The area surrounding Tsugizira-oji is filled with historical charm. Right next to the site, you will find 'Toganoki Chaya,' a traditional rest house with a thatched roof. A short distance away lies the 'Nonaka no Shimizu' (Nonaka Spring). This entire area is part of the historic Nakahechi route that connects to the village of Chikatsuyu.
