The Tsugaru Iwaki Skyline is a scenic toll road that climbs up to the 8th station of Mt. Iwaki, one of Aomori Prefecture's most iconic mountains. As you ascend, the changing topography and the grand scale of the natural landscape unfold before your eyes. From this high vantage point, you can enjoy a vast panoramic view that stretches as far north as Matsumae-zaki in Hokkaido and as far southwest as the Shirakami-Sanchi mountain range, providing a perfect sense of the region's geographical majesty.
Mt. Iwaki has long been a revered mountain by the local community. The Skyline was developed to provide visitors with easy access to this incredible natural environment while preserving its pristine state. At the 8th station, you will find a rest area named "IWAKI 1625." The design of the facility is inspired by the golden eagle, a bird of prey that frequently visits the area, reflecting a culture that lives in harmony with the local wildlife and nature.
The most popular feature of this route is the ability to take a lift from the 8th station up to the 9th station. The lift ride takes approximately 10 minutes, allowing you to experience the dramatic change in altitude and scenery. The road itself is a well-maintained mountain pass, offering a changing vista as you climb higher. For those seeking a physical challenge, the route is also popular for hill climbing, with a trek or ride to the summit taking roughly 30 to 40 minutes.
The road is typically open from late April to mid-November. Summer and autumn are particularly beautiful, offering clear skies and unobstructed views of the surrounding mountains. Please note that opening hours and closing times may change due to weather conditions or snow levels. Daytime visits are highly recommended to ensure the best visibility of the distant landscape and the Shirakami-Sanchi area.
In addition to driving, visitors can experience the thrill of the lift to reach higher elevations quickly. The route also serves as a popular destination for cyclists and motorcyclists looking to perform a "hill climb" toward the summit. Whether you are driving for leisure or seeking an athletic challenge, the ascent provides a unique perspective of the mountain's scale.
The area is conveniently located near major cities such as Hirosaki, Goshogawara, and Aomori. The natural environment around Mt. Iwaki serves as an excellent base for travelers looking to explore other natural wonders in the Aomori region after their drive or lift ride.
Please prepare for both the road toll and the lift fees. It is recommended to carry cash as some automated or smaller facilities may have limited card acceptance.

No advanced reservations are required to use the road or the lift.
Because of the high altitude, temperatures are significantly lower than at sea level. We strongly recommend bringing a jacket or warm layers, especially if you plan to stay near the summit.
Photography is permitted from the lift and the roadway; however, please prioritize safety and do not obstruct traffic or other passengers.
While the road is designed for vehicle travel, please be aware that the lift stations and rest areas may have steps or uneven surfaces.
