Doyu Onsen is a historic hot spring village situated in Fukushima City, Fukushima Prefecture. Located at an altitude of approximately 450 meters, the entire area is part of the scenic Bandai-Azuma National Park. The town is embraced by magnificent mountain ranges, including Jododaira, Mt. Ikkokei, Azuma Kogane, and the Adatara Mountains, offering a breathtaking backdrop for your hot spring experience. Additionally, Doyu is celebrated as one of Japan's three major Kokeshi doll production centers, making it a vital hub for preserving traditional Japanese culture.
With a history spanning over 1,400 years, this hot spring town served as a vital post station along the Aizu Kaido (Doyu Kaido) route, connecting Fukushima Castle Town to the Aizu region. Legend has it that the spring was discovered when the deity Omunachi-no-mikoto struck the ground with a spear, creating the 'Tsukiyū' (piercing spring) that gave the area its name. Another legend tells of an envoy from Prince Shotoku who visited the area for medicinal bathing and achieved recovery. In recent years, the area has embraced modern innovation, including renewable energy projects using geothermal and small-scale hydroelectric power, as well as specialized aquaculture such as the farming of Japanese crayfish.
The true charm of Doyu Onsen lies in its diverse mineral compositions and exquisite traditional crafts. The area boasts more than 10 different types of spring water, including bicarbonate, simple thermal, and sulfur springs, allowing you to choose a bath that best suits your needs. The town is also a center for 'Doyu Kokeshi,' one of Japan's three great Kokeshi traditions. These dolls, crafted from birch and maple wood, are characterized by a distinctive black 'snake-eye' ring pattern on the top of the head. Visitors can explore the Doyu Mimuroku-kan and other exhibition halls to witness the beauty of this traditional craftsmanship.
The natural scenery around the hot spring town changes beautifully with the seasons. In spring, the area around Nitonuma is adorned with blooming skunk cabbages and lilies. Summer and autumn bring dramatic shifts in the colors of the surrounding mountains, with the autumn foliage providing a spectacular display of vibrant hues. Additionally, popular tourist destinations such as Urabandai, Inawashiro, and the Aizu area are all within a 30-minute drive, making Doyu an excellent base for exploring the wider Fukushima region.
