Located in the middle of the Fuwa Canal, the Nakajima Lock is a water control facility developed through Toyama City's urban planning projects. This structure showcases the sophisticated civil engineering techniques of the early Showa era and is currently protected as a National Important Cultural Property. The site is a precious historical monument, featuring stone masonry, reinforced concrete, and rivet-joined gates that demonstrate the architectural prowess of the time. Construction of this facility began in June 1930 as part of a major urban planning initiative in Toyama City. It was completed in July 1934 and has functioned as a crucial piece of infrastructure for the Fuwa Canal ever since. The masterful use of concrete, reinforced concrete, and stone reflects the high level of civil engineering precision achieved during the early 20th century. Maintenance and preservation projects were conducted throughout the late 1990s to ensure the dynamic preservation of the lock. It remains one of the few well-preserved examples of a canal lock system in Japanese urban history.
