The Tateyama Museum, located in Unazuki, Tateyama Town, Toyama Prefecture, is a specialized institution dedicated to the natural environment and the deep-rooted spiritual traditions of Mount Tateyama. The museum is composed of several distinct zones: the Exhibition Hall, the Yobokan video hall, and the Mandara Yuen sensory garden. The museum was established to preserve and showcase the rich natural and cultural heritage of the Tateyama area. The architecture itself is a work of art, designed by the renowned architect Arata Isozaki. A notable feature is the spiral staircase within the building, which is inspired by the 'Snow Wall' (Yuki-no-Otani) found along the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. The grounds are dotted with historical structures and cultural assets that serve as a testament to the region's enduring history.
The museum is divided into several specialized areas, each offering a unique perspective. In the Exhibition Hall, permanent displays detail the natural history and cultural evolution of Tateyama. The Yobokan video hall offers an immersive experience, featuring high-definition footage of the landscape and spiritual traditions projected onto a massive three-sided screen. For a more tactile experience, the Mandara Yuen allows visitors to engage their senses to experience the world of the 'Tateyama Mandala.' Additionally, the museum houses precious artifacts, including national designated cultural properties such as copper shakujo (Buddhist staves) and statues of deities, illustrating the depth of local religious practices.
The museum is generally open from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM (last entry at 4:30 PM). Please note that certain facilities are subject to seasonal changes. Specifically, the Mandara Yuen is an outdoor facility and is closed during the winter season from December to March. Additionally, special exhibitions may be held during certain periods, offering different themes and fresh perspectives on the region's history.

It is approximately a 15-minute drive from Tateyama Station (Toyama Chihoku Railway) and about 30 minutes from the Tateyama IC on the Hokuriku Expressway. It also serves as an excellent starting point for those exploring the nearby Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route.
When visiting the museum, please treat all exhibits with respect and follow the posted guidelines to ensure the preservation of the artifacts. While there is no strict dress code, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Please ensure you arrive well before the final entry time of 4:30 PM to fully enjoy the exhibits.
