Opened in 2017, the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design is built around the concept of "connecting art and design." The architecture is a striking work of art itself, featuring a unique shape reminiscent of the bow of a ship, utilizing aluminum—a major industry in Toyama—in its design. The museum houses a collection of about 16,000 items, including 20th-century modern and contemporary art, as well as design pieces such as posters and chairs. This allows visitors to appreciate art through the lens of functional design. Located on the "Viewpoint Hill" within the 12,548m² Fugan Canal Kansui Park, the building's structure is a significant attraction in its own right.
The museum inherited the collection of the former Toyama Prefectural Museum of Modern Art, which opened in 1981. Due to the aging of the previous facility, the museum was relocated and rebuilt in the West District of Fugan Canal Kansui Park. The project involved a total construction cost of approximately 8.5 billion yen, with the design led by the renowned architect Hiroshi Naito. The exterior, which incorporates aluminum reflecting Toyama's industrial identity, and the glass facade are central to its design. The museum also serves as a cultural hub, housing the secretariat of the Toyama Prefectural Museum Association.
The museum features six exhibition rooms across the 2nd and 3rd floors, each with specific themes. The permanent collection showcases both modern/contemporary art and various design works. A standout feature is the "Onomatopoeia Rooftop," a lush green rooftop garden. From here, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the majestic Tateyama mountain range stretching across the Fugan Canal Kansui Park. Additionally, the east side of the 2nd and 3rd floors features floor-to-ceiling glass walls, creating a seamless visual experience between the indoor exhibits and the outdoor landscape.
Spring and autumn are ideal seasons for strolling through the rooftop garden and the museum promenade. In spring, the landscape changes beautifully near the areas known for their historic cherry blossom trees. On clear summer days, the glass-walled entrance and cafe areas offer crisp, clear views of the Tateyama mountain silhouette. At night, the architectural beauty of the building is illuminated, blending beautifully with the quiet atmosphere of the park. Since the exhibition rooms typically close around 17:00, we recommend visiting in the early afternoon.
Beyond viewing art, visitors can learn about the history and techniques of design. The TAD Gallery sometimes features exhibits on architectural blueprints, models, and the materials used in the building's construction, offering a deep dive into the architectural process. The museum also features an on-site cafe and restaurant, allowing you to enjoy food and drinks in an artistic environment. In the surrounding Fugan Canal Kansui Park, you can also experience a canal cruise via the Water Line (subject to seasonal closures) or relax at the famous Starbucks Coffee located in the park.
The museum is situated within Fugan Canal Kansui Park, which boasts many attractions. This includes a Starbucks Coffee often cited as one of the most beautiful in the world. Nearby, you can also find the Ushijima Sluice Gate, a registered tangible cultural property, and the boarding point for the Fugan Water Line, both of which offer beautiful waterfront views. The museum is easily accessible from central Toyama City and is located near facilities such as the Toyama City General Gymnasium and Toyama Red Cross Hospital.
To protect the artworks, there are certain areas where photography is restricted, and rules regarding food and drink inside the exhibition rooms apply. Since you will be walking through various levels, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. For payments, credit cards and transit IC cards are accepted at the museum's facilities and nearby cafes. While some English signage and staff assistance are available, it is always helpful to check specific details in advance.
