Toyama City Family Park is located within Shiroyama Park in the Kureha Hills, west of Toyama City. Operating under the philosophy of 'Creating a new Satoyama where both people and forests thrive,' the park focuses on the harmony between animals, the Satoyama landscape, and the local community. Rather than being a simple exhibition facility, it is distinguished by its dedication to environmental conservation and biological breeding programs. Visitors can observe a diverse range of animals within a lush, green environment that promotes ecological awareness.
Opened in 1984, the park has evolved into a significant institution for biodiversity. While its construction was once a subject of environmental debate, it is now recognized as a 'Conservation Zoo for Rare Species' and is certified by the Ministry of the Environment. The facility is a pioneer in the artificial hatching and natural breeding of the Japanese Rock Ptarmigan (Nihon Raicho), having achieved a major milestone in 2019 with the first successful natural hatching through artificial breeding efforts in Japan. This role as a guardian of Japan's natural heritage ensures that these precious species are preserved for future generations.
Throughout the park, various animals live in specialized areas designed to mimic their natural habitats. You can observe large mammals such as giraffes, zebras, and tigers, as well as red pandas, otters, penguins, and a wide variety of birds, insects, and reptiles. The 'Natural Zones' are particularly noteworthy; for instance, there are nesting boxes equipped with cameras to observe flying squirrels, and scenic walking paths that change with the seasons. The biotope area also offers unique opportunities, such as seasonal night-time observation events, allowing you to witness the authentic behaviors of wildlife.
The park offers different charms depending on the time of year. From spring to autumn, the walking trails and grassy lawns are perfect for outdoor activities, and the lush greenery provides excellent opportunities to observe seasonal plants and insects. Around June, the 'Hotaru no Oyado' area may host firefly observation events. Please note that during the winter months, operating hours tend to be shorter, so it is recommended to check the schedule in advance. While animals are most active during bright daylight hours, the evening offers a peaceful, serene atmosphere.
There are several ways to engage with nature at the park. You can enjoy a horseback riding experience at the 'Horse Riding Area,' learn through the Nature Experience Center, or enjoy a leisurely walk along the forest paths. The exhibits are designed to help visitors understand the complex mechanisms of the natural world through breeding-focused displays. It is an ideal destination for families looking to spend quality time in a natural setting.
Located in the scenic Kureha Hills, the park is surrounded by vast natural spaces. The surrounding area features well-maintained BBQ sites, grassy lawns, and hiking trails, making it easy to combine a zoo visit with outdoor recreation. Its proximity to other cultural sites in Toyama City makes it a convenient stop during a broader Toyama sightseeing itinerary.
Because the park features natural terrain and forest paths, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes. As most activities are outdoors, please bring items for sun protection or warmth (hats, drinks, or extra layers) depending on the season. To protect the animals and the environment, please follow the rules: do not feed the animals, do not photograph in restricted areas, and always take your trash home with you. Regarding payment, while credit cards and transit IC cards may be accepted at certain facilities, it is highly recommended to carry cash for smaller shops or vending machines within the park.
