Todou Falls is a spectacular waterfall located in the Todou Valley of Kitaakita City, Akita Prefecture. This area sits at the headwaters of the Noro River, upstream from Taihei Lake and Komatakyō, and is characterized by a beautiful U-shaped valley. The landscape, where the shimmering clear stream harmonizes with the changing seasons, is a sight to behold. It is a popular destination for nature observation and trekking, offering a deep connection to the local ecosystem.
The Todou Valley has long been cherished for its rich natural environment. Historically, the surrounding areas, such as the Akamizu Valley, were part of the traditional routes used by travelers heading toward the Tamagawa Onsen hot spring resorts. The area around Todou Falls preserves the raw beauty of natural formations and serves as a vital protected area for the local environment. The region is blessed with ancient beech forests and abundant water resources, embodying the quintessential beauty of Japan's wilderness.
Visitors can discover diverse natural landscapes throughout the Todou Valley. Near the falls, the bedrock is dotted with numerous "potholes" (natural circular depressions) carved by the powerful force of the flowing water. Further upstream, you can encounter different types of falls, such as Nakano-taki and Otaki, providing a varied and engaging trekking experience. Because it is located at the source of the Noro River, the water clarity is exceptional, allowing you to observe the brilliant sparkle of the stream up close.
The area offers different charms depending on when you visit. The best time to experience the natural beauty is from May to November. From early to mid-October, the valley transforms into a vibrant tapestry of colors during the autumn foliage season. In the summer, you can also enjoy the sight of various subalpine wetland plants in bloom, making every season a unique way to enjoy nature.
The primary way to experience this area is through trekking. A popular route takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes (one way) from the Morigiyama Wild Animal Center to Todou Falls, allowing you to enjoy forest bathing amidst the ancient beech trees. Along the way, you might even spot the presence of the Black Woodpecker. Please note that the upper sections of the falls do not have maintained paths, so proper gear and caution are required for more advanced exploration.
The area around Todou Valley offers even deeper exploration routes for experienced hikers. These include the Usotaki Course in the Akamizu Valley (approx. 2.5 hours one way) and a longer traverse toward the Tamagawa Onsen area (approx. 4 hours one way). As these routes can be challenging, it is highly recommended to use a local guide for a safe and professional experience. The proximity to various hot spring areas also allows for a wonderful combination of nature walks and relaxation.
Preparation is key due to the wild nature of the area. Please wear sturdy walking shoes and appropriate outdoor clothing. If you plan to explore the upper sections of the waterfall, spiked shoes or specialized hiking boots are highly recommended. Additionally, please respect local regulations: fishing is strictly prohibited in the entire Noro River area. Always check the latest weather reports before heading out, as sudden rainfall can cause rising water levels, and be mindful of the risks of falling rocks or slipping.
