Tottori Airport is a regional airport located in Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture. Since 2015, it has officially used the name "Tottori Sand Dunes Conan Airport," celebrating its proximity to the famous Tottori Sand Dunes and its connection to the manga "Detective Conan" by Tottori-native creator Gosho Aoyama. The airport primarily serves the eastern Tottori region, with regular domestic flights connecting to major hubs like Tokyo (Haneda Airport). The airport features facilities deeply rooted in the local community and services designed to enhance traveler convenience.
The history of the current airport dates back to 1967, with operations beginning on July 31 of that year. Originally, the runway was 1,200 meters long, but it has undergone several expansions to meet growing demand: 1,500 meters in 1972, 1,800 meters in 1985, and finally reaching 2,000 meters in 1990. By 1990, the airport also began hosting international charter flights. In 2015, the airport adopted the nickname "Tottori Sand Dunes Conan Airport" to boost its brand recognition, making it a popular and unique destination for fans of the series.
While primarily a transit hub, the airport is famous for its "Detective Conan" theme. Visitors can enjoy the atmosphere of the manga world throughout the domestic terminal building (1st and 2nd floors). The airport also serves as a center for international exchange via the Tottori Airport International Hall. Additionally, aviation enthusiasts may enjoy watching the movement of aircraft, including the Tottori Prefectural Police aviation unit's Agusta A109 (nicknamed "Sakyu").
As the airport primarily operates scheduled domestic flights, your usage will depend on flight schedules. Since 2006, operating hours have been extended, with the airport currently operating from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM. It is used year-round for both sightseeing at the Tottori Sand Dunes and business travel. It is highly recommended to check the latest flight status and schedules in advance, especially for early morning or late-night travel.
The airport provides various services, including tourist information centers to help travelers gather local information. In the past, the airport has hosted special events like "Mystery-Solving Rallies," positioning itself as more than just a transit point, but a place to enjoy local culture and characters. Transportation links such as rental cars, buses, and taxis are well-established around the airport to facilitate smooth travel to nearby destinations.
The airport is located approximately 7 km northwest of Tottori City, situated in a coastal area surrounded by the Sea of Japan, the Chizu River, and Lake Koyama. It serves as a major access point for the Tottori Sand Dunes, with bus and taxi services available. Other nearby attractions include the "Gosho Aoyama Manga Factory," making the airport a key starting point for your sightseeing route.
