Tsutsube no Sakura is a magnificent single Edohigan cherry tree located in Yamatsuri Town, Higashishirakawa District, Fukushima Prefecture. This ancient tree has stood for over 600 years, reaching a height of 18 meters and a circumference of 6.5 meters. It is renowned as one of the earliest blooming cherry trees in Fukushima, signaling the arrival of spring with its delicate pink blossoms. The tree is set against a beautiful mountain landscape, creating a harmonious scene of nature and tradition.
This cherry tree is a designated Natural Monument of Fukushima Prefecture. For generations, local farmers have used its blooming as a traditional sign to begin their agricultural work, making it a vital cultural indicator of the changing seasons. To preserve this precious ancient tree, support structures are in place to protect its massive trunk and sprawling branches.
The greatest draw is the sight of the massive Edohigan cherry tree spreading its powerful branches toward the sky. At full bloom, the density of the pink blossoms is truly overwhelming. Visitors can also enjoy the stunning color contrast between the pink cherry blossoms and the yellow rapeseed flowers (Nanohana) blooming at its base. A unique highlight is the sight of a local train, often featuring distinctive yellow or blue colors, passing through this picturesque landscape.
The peak viewing season is typically from late March to early April. Because this tree blooms earlier than many others in Fukushima, it is an excellent spot for early spring travelers. During the day, you can enjoy the vibrant contrast of pink and yellow under a clear blue sky. Occasionally, the tree is illuminated at night, offering a different, more mystical atmosphere as the glowing pink blossoms stand out against the dark night sky.
The primary activity is the peaceful appreciation of nature. A wooden fence is installed around the base of the tree to protect it, allowing visitors to enjoy the view from a safe distance. It is a perfect spot for photography, especially for capturing the harmony between the ancient tree and the nostalgic rural railway scenery.
