Dosun-ji is a historic temple located in Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It holds deep historical significance as the family temple of the legendary Mori Motonari and served as a backdrop to the transformative Meiji Restoration era. The temple grounds house the Sanmon Gate and Kannon-do Hall, both of which are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The history of Dosun-ji dates back to the spring of 1572 (Eikame 3), when it was originally established within the castle of Yoshida in Aki Province. It was founded as the family temple for Mori Motonary. Later, the temple was moved to its current location in Yamaguchi City. Several buildings on the grounds are historical structures that were relocated from other sites, having been preserved through meticulous restoration and repair over the centuries. During the turbulent end of the Edo period, the site played a crucial role in local history, serving as a temporary residence for Mori Takachika and as a barracks for the Kiheitai militia.
The most significant highlights of Dosun-ji are its structures designated as National Important Cultural Properties. First, the Sanmon Gate at the entrance is a 'Shikaku-mon' style gate with supporting pillars at the front and back. While the roof was once covered in traditional tiles, it has been restored to its original 'Hiwadabuki' (cypress bark) style, showcasing a striking and elegant silhouette. Second, the Kannon-do Hall is a relocated building that once served as a Buddhist hall elsewhere. This structure utilizes the 'Karayo' architectural style with an 'Irimoya-zukuri' (hip-and-gable) roof. The exterior features a unique 'Keshobana' (decorative eaves) structure that is exceptionally rare in Japan, making it a masterpiece of traditional design.
Dosun-ji reveals different charms depending on the season. For a peaceful stroll, the early morning or the calm afternoon hours are ideal.
