The permanent exhibition rooms are organized into five captivating themes: the transitions of the domain's administration, the lifestyle of the daimyo (feudal lords), the structure of the castle, the daily life of the castle town, and the legendary activities of the Awa Navy.

Built on the site of the former Tokushima Castle Omote-goten (main palace), the museum plays a vital role in preserving the local historical and cultural identity. The exhibits focus heavily on the Tokushima Domain and the Hachisuka clan, covering a wide spectrum from political shifts to the sophisticated lifestyle of the ruling class and the maritime history of the Awa Navy.

The exhibition area is divided into five distinct sections, each offering a unique window into the past:

  • *Life and Culture of the Daimyo:** High-level artistic displays including armor, swords, folding screens, and ceremonial robes, showcasing the refined culture of the ruling class.
  • *Castle Structure:** A highly detailed 1/50 scale model of the Tokushima Castle Palace, allowing visitors to visually grasp the architectural complexity of the castle.
  • *Castle Town Life:** Everyday tools and implements, such as scales used by merchants, providing insight into the lives of commoners.
  • *The Awa Navy:** A centerpiece of the museum is the 'Senzanmaru,' a whaleboat designated as a National Important Cultural Property, believed to have been used by the lords of the Tokushima Domain.

Best Time to Visit

The museum is open from 9:30 to 17:00. We recommend visiting during the daytime to enjoy a relaxed and thorough viewing experience. From mid-October to late November, the museum often hosts special exhibitions featuring curated collections from across the country, making this an excellent time to visit for a broader cultural experience.

The visual impact of the 'Senzanmaru' whaleboat and the architectural scale model provides a tangible connection to the past.
