Toki no Mori Park is a vital facility located on Sado Island, Niigata Prefecture, dedicated to the conservation and reintroduction of the Crested Ibis (Toki). The park features the 'Toki Museum,' which showcases exhibits regarding the ecology and history of the species, and the 'Toki Fureai Plaza,' where you can observe the birds in an environment that closely resembles their natural habitat. The facility is equipped with large-scale aviaries, allowing visitors to witness the birds flying, foraging, and building nests.
The facility was established to drive the captive breeding and reintroduction efforts for the Crested Ibis, a species that once faced the threat of extinction. The Toki Museum displays numerous documents detailing the historical process of how the species was brought back from the brink of extinction and the specific activities currently underway. All contributions collected from visitors are donated to the 'Sado City Toki Environment Improvement Fund' to support ongoing wildlife reintroduction efforts.
The facility consists of two primary observation areas. First is the 'Toki Museum,' where you can learn about the biological history and conservation efforts of the Crested Ibis. Second is the 'Observation Corridor,' which allows you to look through windows into the adjacent Sado Toki Conservation Center. From this vantage point, you can observe the birds living in large-scale cages in a state close to nature. At the Toki Fureai Plaza, you can witness daily behaviors such as flight and foraging activities.
The facility operates year-round, offering different opportunities to observe changes in the birds' behavior and the surrounding environment across the seasons. The park is open from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Please note that the facility is closed on Mondays from March to November. It is highly recommended to check the schedule before your visit to ensure availability.
Visitors can gain a deep understanding of the Crested Ibis through visual observation and educational exhibits. By browsing the materials in the Toki Museum and watching the birds through the observation corridor, you can learn about the current status of rare bird conservation. The large-scale cages provide an ideal environment to see natural movements, such as the birds searching for food or constructing nests.
