The centerpiece is a grand two-story wooden structure built in 1905 using advanced construction techniques of that era. Originally a branch of the Watanabe family, the site was renamed Tokeien in 1977 and is currently managed by Sekikawa Village. The space offers a seamless blend of architectural beauty and the surrounding natural landscape.
Built in 1905 (Meiji 38), this structure was a testament to the high-level woodworking skills of the time. The traditional Japanese-style architecture, known as Irimoya-zukuri, has been preserved for generations. The name 'Tokeien' was affectionately given by local residents, who have cherished it as a vital piece of local heritage. A unique aspect of the site is the involvement of the local community; you can find QR codes for video guides created by local elementary school students, showcasing a heartwarming effort by the younger generation to share their local culture with visitors.
The greatest appeal of Tokeien lies in the contrast between the heavy, historic wooden architecture and the delicate beauty of the Japanese garden. Additionally, the traditional storehouse (Kura) occasionally hosts exhibitions by the 'Kamitozawa Take-to-ro Society.'
