Tokai-kan is a historic facility located in Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It was originally established in 1928 (Showa 3) as a traditional Japanese inn (Ryokan) and has since been meticulously restored and preserved by Ito City as a designated cultural property. The building itself serves as a living museum, where the original design and architectural details of the early Showa era are preserved in every corner. Today, visitors can explore the beautiful interiors of the former guest rooms and grand halls, or enjoy the hot spring baths as a day-use visitor, allowing you to experience both Japan's modern architectural history and its soothing hot spring culture simultaneously.
This facility is a stunning example of early Showa-era architecture. While it once welcomed many travelers to the Ito hot spring area, the original inn's service came to an end in 1997. Following this, the building underwent preservation and renovation by the city to serve as a cultural asset. It now stands as a vital center for local history, preserving the way life was lived in a high-end Japanese inn during the pre-war era, including the grand social layouts of the large banquet halls used for gatherings.
There are many spaces within the building that retain the atmosphere of a bygone era. A particularly striking feature is the grand hall on the 3rd floor; this was once a place for elaborate banquets hosted by Geisha, complete with a stage, evoking the glamorous social scenes of the past. The intricate interior design of the guest rooms and the structural elegance of the building are also major draws for visitors. At night, the building is often illuminated, offering a completely different, more mystical atmosphere compared to the daytime.
During the day, you can clearly observe the fine details of the wooden architecture and the textures of the building under natural light. In the evening, the illuminated exterior creates a highly emotional and romantic atmosphere, making it a wonderful spot for a night stroll. If you wish to use the hot spring baths, the primary hours are during the day (11:00–20:00), but visiting in the late afternoon to unwind after a day of sightseeing is also highly recommended. The atmosphere of the surrounding area shifts beautifully with the seasons.
At Tokai-kan, your visit goes beyond mere sightseeing. The most unique way to experience the site is through the "day-use hot spring" (tachiyori-yu) service. You can relax and rejuvenate in the hot springs while surrounded by a historic setting. Walking through the halls also provides a visual journey into the lifestyle and social culture of pre-war Japan.
The Ito Onsen area is home to many other accommodation and hot spring facilities. Tokai-kan is conveniently located within walking distance of Ito Station, making it an easy stop during your travels. The surrounding neighborhood is filled with various restaurants and souvenir shops, and the nearby Okawa Bridge often features beautiful light-up events, making the entire area perfect for exploring on foot.
To protect the historic structure, please be mindful of your footing when walking through the building. Because there are many areas where you must remove your shoes or navigate steps, we recommend wearing comfortable shoes that are easy to slip on and off. If you plan to use the hot spring baths, please check the specific rules (such as whether swimwear is required) in advance for a smooth experience. Payments can be made via cash or credit card.
