Tokachidake Obosetai is a scenic observation point located at an altitude of 930 meters within the majestic Daisetsuzan National Park. Situated directly below the main peak of Mount Tokachi, the area features a dynamic landscape where desolate volcanic rock surfaces coexist with lush, abundant nature. The site offers a 360-degree panoramic view that stretches from Asahikawa City to Furano City, revealing a different face with every season. In summer, it serves as a vital base for mountaineers, while autumn brings vibrant colors to the vast foothills, and winter offers a serene, snow-covered landscape.
The area is part of the precious natural environment of Daisetsuzan National Park. A notable bridge on the road leading from Shirogane Onsen to Obosetai was named by the famous author Ayako Miura, who was born in Asahikawa. The region holds significant historical value as a landscape shaped by volcanic activity and a culture of living in harmony with nature. In 2016, the Tokachidake Obosetai Shelter was completed to ensure visitors can spend their time comfortably.
The views from Obosetai encompass the most prominent peaks in the region. You can easily spot Asahidake, the highest peak in Daisetsuzan, alongside other famous mountains like Biei-dake, Biei Fuji, and Mt. Kamifurano. Looking down, the vast basin extending from Asahikawa to Furano provides a sense of the incredible geological dynamism of the area. The sight of volcanic rocks and gravel scattered across the landscape visually conveys the raw power of nature.
The greatest charm of this location is the changing scenery throughout the year. During the summer, it is a popular basecamp for hikers amidst lush greenery. In autumn (late September to early October), the creeping pine and white birch trees turn vibrant colors, painting the foothills of the Tokachi mountain range. The sight of autumn colors mixing with the first snowfall is a particularly rare and precious spectacle. Depending on the time of day, you can also witness different atmospheres, such as morning mist or beautiful sunset views.
Primary activities include enjoying the panoramic vistas from the observatory and hiking in the surrounding area. In the summer, it functions as a base for serious mountaineering. It is also a highly popular destination for scenic drives, allowing you to experience the vast, expansive nature of Hokkaido directly from your car or the parking area.
Common travel routes include visiting the nearby Shirogane Onsen hot spring area to combine nature walks with relaxing hot springs. The area also provides excellent access to the Biei and Furano regions, making it easy to incorporate this scenic stop into a larger Hokkaido sightseeing itinerary.
Due to the high altitude, temperatures can fluctuate significantly depending on the season and weather. Even in summer, we recommend bringing a light jacket for warmth, and during autumn or winter, heavy cold-weather gear is essential. While parking is free, please check if any nearby facilities require cash or card for other services. There are no restrictions on photography for enjoying the scenery, but please follow all rules to protect the natural environment, including taking all trash back with you. For accessibility, there are designated parking spaces for wheelchairs.
