Tokachi Hills is a sprawling 23-hectare facility located in Makubetsu, Hokkaido, designed around the themes of 'agriculture' and 'food.' The estate features a stunning hilltop garden, seasonal events, and dining experiences that utilize the rich bounty of the Tokachi region. It offers a unique way to experience the harmony between natural landscapes and local food culture that defines Hokkaido.
The facility is deeply rooted in the rich agricultural heritage of the Tokachi region. Rather than being a simple garden, it serves as a hub to showcase the charm of local produce and culinary traditions. The landscape is thoughtfully designed so that visitors can feel the changing seasons through the growth of plants and the joy of the harvest.
The garden area features various sections where vegetables, fruits, and herbs are cultivated. A major highlight is the 'Umbrella Sky'—one of the largest in Hokkaido—which creates a colorful, picturesque view of umbrellas against the sky, particularly prominent from May to June. Depending on the season, you can also enjoy cherry blossom viewing or special events centered around fresh buckwheat (soba).
The scenery changes beautifully throughout the year. Visit in May for cherry blossoms, from June to July to witness the Rose Week and the vibrant Umbrella Sky, or in October for autumn events featuring fresh buckwheat. We recommend visiting during daylight hours to fully enjoy the vivid colors of the plants and the striking sky.
Visitors can enjoy food and drink while being immersed in nature. The on-site shop cafe serves seasonal menus, such as soft-serve ice cream made with local Tokachi red beans (azuki). The shop also offers a variety of goods, including local bean-based products, handmade crafts by local artists, and gardening accessories. Since the grounds are quite large, you may also rent an electric cart (additional fee) to travel around the perimeter comfortably.
While the Tokachi region boasts many tourist spots, Tokachi Hills is unique for its seamless integration with the vast, surrounding farmland, offering a landscape that truly symbolizes the agricultural heart of Hokkaido.
While the paths are generally barrier-free, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes due to the large size of the estate. To protect the flora, please do not step into flower beds or touch the plants. Photography is permitted for personal use, but please refrain from long-term occupation of space or photographing staff. The use of drones and placing tripods inside flower beds is strictly prohibited. The facility is a non-smoking area; please smoke only inside your private vehicle. If visiting with pets, they must be kept on a leash (under 2m) and you must clean up after them immediately. For accessibility, wheelchairs and strollers are available for free rental.
