Toin Teien is a historic garden located on the eastern side of the Heijo Palace Site. Historically referred to as 'Togu' or 'Toin,' this area is believed to have served a role similar to a guest house where imperial families held banquets and ceremonies. It remains a precious space that preserves the atmosphere of ancient Japanese court culture through its meticulously maintained historical landscapes.
The history of this garden is deeply intertwined with the structure of the Heijo Palace. Following the discovery of the garden's ruins in 1967, extensive research was conducted, leading to its reconstruction in its current form in 1998. It stands as a significant historical site that conveys the role of the ancient imperial court as a center for social gatherings and rituals.
The center of the garden features a landscape centered around a tranquil pond. The design utilizes the natural topography and water flow, allowing visitors to observe ancient Japanese garden styles alongside the surrounding seasonal vegetation.
