Togari Onsen Ski Resort is a premier ski destination located in Iiyama City, Nagano Prefecture, spanning a vast area of approximately 140 hectares. The resort features 16 diverse courses designed to utilize the natural terrain, catering to all skill levels from beginners to advanced experts. A standout feature is the legendary mogul burn, which is the longest in Japan at over 300 meters, along with specialized carving courses. Additionally, the proximity of onsen (hot spring) facilities to the slopes provides the perfect environment for relaxation after a day of intense skiing or snowboarding.
Established in 1977, this ski resort has served as a central hub for regional leisure for decades. In 1986, to commemorate its 30th anniversary, the "Ski Jizo" (a guardian deity statue) was erected, reflecting the deep-rooted local culture. In recent years, the resort has undergone facility renewals and structural updates to enhance the visitor experience. The area has a rich history of hosting various entertainment events, making it a versatile destination for both sports and community celebrations.
The ski area is divided into two primary zones: the Earth Dragon Field and the Sky Dragon Field. The Earth Dragon Field features the Earth Top Lift and Earth Tail Lift, and includes the "Dragon Park" area for freestyle enthusiasts. The Sky Dragon Field is served by the Sky Top Lift and Sky Tail Lift, offering a wide variety of slopes. Depending on the season, visitors may also experience unique cultural events such as the "Tenku no Warabi-en" (Sky Bracken Garden) related to local natural harvests.
The peak season is the winter skiing and snowboarding period, primarily from December through March. The resort often offers night skiing (night operations), allowing visitors to enjoy the slopes in the evening after work or during late-night sessions. In early spring, seasonal events related to the harvesting of wild bracken (warabi) may take place. Because operating hours and course availability change with the seasons, it is highly recommended to check the latest official information before your visit.
Beyond standard downhill skiing and snowboarding, the resort is a haven for advanced enthusiasts looking to tackle the mogul burn or practice tricks in the park areas. After your runs, you can transition from the snow to the warmth of the "Akatsuki-no-Yu" hot spring facility located at the base. This seamless transition from high-adrenaline sports to soothing hot spring relaxation defines the quintessential Japanese snow resort experience.
Behind the ski resort, you will find a charming area filled with local family-run guest houses (minshuku). The resort is accessible via the Joetsu Expressway (approximately 17km from the Toyota Iiyama Interchange) and is reachable by bus from JR Iiyama Station or JR Togari-Nozawa Onsen Station. The surrounding area also features seasonal restaurants and facilities related to local food culture.
In addition to full ski or snowboard gear, please bring a towel and a change of clothes if you plan to use the hot spring facilities. Given the mountain climate, thorough cold-weather protection (thermal wear) is essential. While many services at the resort are moving toward cashless payments, it is wise to carry some cash for local amenities. Please follow all safety rules on the slopes and respect local etiquette to ensure a safe and pleasant experience for everyone.
