Togakushi Soba Museum Tonkururin is a unique cultural complex located at the gateway to the beautiful Togakushi Kogen highlands in Nagano. It serves as a hub for experiencing "Togakushi Soba," which is celebrated as one of the three greatest soba varieties in Japan. The facility is multi-faceted, combining a museum that preserves local history, a restaurant for enjoying fresh noodles, a souvenir shop for local specialties, and even a bouldering facility for active visitors.
Togakushi Soba is a signature delicacy of the Shinshu region in Nagano Prefecture. The name "Tonkururin" is derived from the rhythmic sound and motion used when flipping the buckwheat dough during the making process. This facility plays a vital role in preserving and passing down the traditional craftsmanship and history of soba culture to future generations.
Visitors can explore the museum to learn about the deep-rooted history of buckwheat noodles. After learning, you can enjoy the authentic taste of the region at the on-site restaurant. The souvenir shop offers a variety of local products, making it a great place for gifts. For those seeking physical activity, the facility also features a bouldering center, offering a unique blend of culinary and athletic experiences.
The facility typically opens for the season around mid-April (approximately April 15th) and remains closed during the winter months. Standard operating hours are from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. It is highly recommended to visit between May and October to enjoy the peak sightseeing seasons of summer and autumn.
A highlight of the facility is the hands-on soba-making experience (Soba-uchi). The pricing for these sessions is structured as follows: 3,500 JPY for 2 servings or 5,000 JPY for 4 servings. Additionally, the on-site bouldering facility provides an opportunity for more active, sports-based entertainment.
Situated at the entrance to the Togaki-shi highlands, the facility is surrounded by breathtaking nature and is close to famous spiritual sites like Togakushi Shrine. The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons, offering a wonderful backdrop for your visit.
Please prepare accordingly based on your planned activities. If you intend to participate in the soba-making experience or bouldering, wear comfortable, easy-to-move-in clothing. Note that the facility is closed on Wednesdays, so please check the schedule before your trip. As the facility is closed during the winter, ensure your visit falls within the operational season.
