Tsukage Nature Park is a high-altitude wetland located at an elevation of approximately 1,900m in Tsukage Kogen, Otari Village, Nagano Prefecture. Spanning about 100 hectares, this area is a protected part of the Chubu Sangaku National Park. The greatest charm of this location lies in the vibrant colors of seasonal alpine plants and the majestic panoramic views of the Hakuba Mountain Range. When the air is particularly clear, the landscape feels as if the mountains are right in front of you.
This wetland was formed by the volcanic activity of Mount Hakuba Norikura. The geological process created stepped fault lines that formed flat basins where water collected, allowing peat and plants like sphagnum moss and Eriophorum to thrive over many years. To protect this delicate ecosystem, access to the park was transitioned from regular buses to a ropeway system in 1994. Furthermore, accessibility improvements (barrier-free design) were implemented in 2007, making it easier for more people to enjoy the natural beauty.
The park features a well-maintained 5.5km walking trail where you can enjoy a stroll while learning about local flora through botanical guides. In summer, the landscape is lush and green with blooming flowers, while autumn brings brilliant colors. The Visitor Center offers educational exhibits regarding the local flora, fauna, and the geological formation of the area. From the observation wetlands, you can enjoy a sweeping view of the Hakuba Daisetsu-kei (Great Snowy Valley) and the Ushiro-Tateyama mountain range.
The experience changes beautifully with the seasons. From June to August, the wetland is adorned with summer flowers. From late August to mid-September, the air becomes exceptionally clear, offering the best views of the Hakuba Mountains. This is also a prime time for stargazing.
