Togakushi Jinja Hokosha is one of the five shrines of Togakushi, located at the foot of the sacred Mount Togakushi in Nagano Prefecture. This shrine has long been a place of worship for those seeking protection for safe childbirth, women, and children, as well as for success in cultivation, academics, and the arts. As the first shrine-complex encountered when ascending from the Nagano city area, the path from the entrance to the main sanctuary offers a profound experience that feels worlds away from daily life.
Hokosha is said to possess the oldest architectural history among the five Togakushi shrines. The current structure retains the distinct atmosphere of the era of Shinto-Buddhist syncretism, with a history dating back to its construction in 1861. The deep, elegant 'Gongen-zukuri' style architecture features exquisite carvings, believed to be the work of Kitamura Kiyomatsu, a master artisan from the late Edo to early Meiji periods. The shrine holds high status, having been granted permission to use the Imperial Chrysanthemum Crest during the Meiji era. Additionally, the shrine houses a historic portable shrine (mikoshi) weighing approximately 750kg, produced in 1804, which plays a vital role during the grand festival held once every seven years.
The most striking feature is the ascent of approximately 270 stone steps leading to the main shrine. As you reach the top, the historic sanctuary reveals itself in all its glory. At the amulet shop located beside the shrine, visitors can purchase the 'Omina' charm—a special amulet specifically for women that is only available at Hokosha. You can also witness the impressive 750kg traditional mikoshi stored to the right of the shrine, offering a close-up look at Japanese traditional religious heritage.
Hokosha reveals a different face with every season. The autumn months (October to November) are particularly breathtaking, as the entire precinct is enveloped in vibrant autumn colors that frame the stone staircase beautifully. In spring, the area celebrates local traditions like the 'Togakushi Sekichu-shu' sake brewery opening. The amulet shop is open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM and remains operational through the winter (December onwards), allowing for year-round visits. However, please be prepared for significant changes in weather and temperature depending on the season.
Beyond simple prayer, you can immerse yourself in historical architecture and culture. Observe the intricate carvings on the shrine or learn about the significance of the ancient mikoshi to deepen your understanding of Japanese traditions. You may also encounter local culture through regional specialties like 'Togakushi Sekichu-shu' sake. The approach to the shrine is surrounded by rich natural scenery, making for a meditative and refreshing visit.
Hokosha serves as a starting point for exploring the wider Togakushi area. On the path toward Jizo-do, you can find traces of historical structures like the former Sujinmon (Nio Gate). The surrounding area also offers beautiful routes for forest bathing and bird watching, allowing you to spend quality time in a pristine natural environment.
