Todoroki Valley Park is the only natural valley located within the 23 wards of Tokyo, situated in Setagaya. Formed by the erosion of the Musashino Plateau, this area features lush greenery and abundant spring water. Even though it is located in the middle of a bustling metropolis, stepping into the valley feels like entering a different world. The temperature drops slightly, and the soothing sounds of flowing water and rustling leaves create a true "urban oasis." It is an ideal environment to escape the daily grind and refresh your mind and body.
The area possesses a deep connection between nature and human history. Geologically, it is an erosional valley formed by the Musashino Plateau. Historically, the area has been inhabited for centuries; for instance, horizontal-hole kofun (ancient burial mounds) dating back to the 7th century have been discovered here. Additionally, the southern part of the valley is home to Todoroki Fudo-son, a temple with roots in the Sengoku (Warring States) period, which has long been known as a place for spiritual practice utilizing the natural spring water. In 1933, the area was designated as a Tama River Scenic District to preserve its precious landscape and historical heritage.
There are many spots within the valley where you can experience both nature and culture. The walking paths through the Musashino greenery offer opportunities to observe seasonal plants and local birds. History enthusiasts can visit the "Todoroki Keikoku Anahole Kofun" (ancient burial mounds) to reflect on ancient life. Furthermore, the scenery is dotted with sites where nature and spirituality blend, such as the "Fudo no Taki" (Fudo Waterfall) and the historic Chigo Daishi-do and Inari-do shrines. These sites allow visitors to experience the harmony between natural beauty and traditional Japanese spirituality.
Todoroki Valley exhibits different charms throughout the seasons. In spring, you can see fresh greenery budding, while in summer, the shade and spring water provide a refreshing escape from the heat. Autumn brings beautiful foliage, and winter offers a quiet, contemplative atmosphere. Visiting in the afternoon during warmer months is particularly pleasant due to the natural cooling effect of the dense canopy. Please note that for safety and conservation, it is generally advised not to enter after sunset. Additionally, it is best to check the weather before visiting, as heavy rain can cause water levels to rise rapidly.
The experience here centers on connecting with nature. Walking along the well-maintained paths while listening to the songs of birds like the Japanese tit or white-eye, and the gentle sound of the stream, provides a luxurious moment of peace. While there are no high-energy activities, the park is perfect for a "mindfulness" experience—quietly observing nature to center your spirit. You can also learn about Japanese history by exploring the ancient burial mounds and shrines nestled within the landscape.
The area around Todoroki Station is near sophisticated commercial districts like Jiyugaoka, where you can enjoy trendy cafes and boutiques after your walk. The charm of the area also lies in the blend of the natural valley with the quiet, traditional residential streets surrounding it.
As the terrain is natural and uneven, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Be cautious as some parts of the path along the river do not have railings and may be unstable. To protect the environment, please take all trash home with you and respect the local flora and fauna. Since the park lacks artificial lighting in many areas, it is best to avoid visiting at night. When taking photos, please be mindful of other visitors and the natural surroundings.
