Higashi Otani Mantoka is a traditional summer evening event held at Otani Sobyo in Kyoto. The tradition began by lighting lanterns to guide visitors and provide a sense of coolness during the intense heat of the Obon season. The soft, warm glow of the lanterns enveloping the temple grounds creates a deeply mystical atmosphere, offering a precious opportunity to step away from the bustle of daily life and find tranquility while reflecting on oneself or departed loved ones.
Now in its 64th year, this is a deeply historical event. Rather than a mere tourist attraction, it is a sacred time to encounter the teachings of Pure Land Buddhism as established by Shinran Shonin. What started as a practical way to light the path for visitors during the hot summer nights has evolved into a cherished cultural ritual for honoring ancestors and feeling a closer connection to Buddhist teachings.
The greatest draw is the sight of the lanterns illuminating the temple grounds at night. The scenery of Otani Sobyo under the lantern light presents a completely different, ethereal expression compared to its daytime appearance. During the event, Buddhist memorial services are held at the main hall (Hondo). Visitors can experience profound Buddhist teachings through these services and dharma talks. Additionally, you can enjoy visual expressions of Buddhist teachings through 'Hana-moji' (flower calligraphy) exhibitions.
The event is held annually from August 14th to 16th. The most recommended time to visit is after 6:00 PM (18:00) when the lanterns are fully lit. Enjoying the flickering lights amidst the night's stillness is a highlight. Since temperatures in Kyoto can be very high during the Obon season, visiting during the cooler evening hours will ensure a more comfortable experience.
Visitors can feel the essence of Japan's traditional Obon atmosphere by strolling through the grounds bathed in lantern light. Participating in the memorial services at the main hall is a rare and valuable experience unique to this season. These services often include dharma talks, providing a deeper understanding of Japanese spiritual culture.
Otani Sobyo is located in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto. The surrounding area is dotted with historical temples and graveyards, offering a profound sense of Kyoto's traditional and serene atmosphere. A stroll through the neighborhood allows you to fully soak in the quiet, contemplative air of the city.
