Teraogahara Senbonzakura Park is a celebrated cherry blossom spot located in the Bugegawa area of Seki City, Gifu Prefecture. Approximately 1,000 cherry trees are planted along a 2km stretch of the prefectural road connecting Terao Pass (elevation 220m) to the Terao district. This iconic avenue serves as a symbol of spring's arrival. From early to mid-April, the landscape transforms into a breathtaking tunnel of blossoms.
The history of this cherry blossom avenue dates back to 1951. Following the opening of a bus route in the Terao district, local residents initiated a movement to plant trees that would provide shade in summer and allow sunlight through in winter. In March 1952, the residents of the Terao district joined together to plant 300 cherry trees as a symbol of peace. This collective effort marked the beginning of the 'Teraogahara Senbonzakura' (Thousand Cherry Trees of Teraogahara), a landscape that has grown alongside the local community's history.
The most striking feature is the 2km-long cherry blossom tunnel along the prefectural road. The sight of 1,000 trees blooming in continuous succession creates a massive and impressive scale of scenery. Additionally, during the peak blooming season, night-time illuminations are held. The light illuminates the petals, revealing a completely different, mystical expression of the trees compared to the bright daylight hours.
The ideal time to visit is from early to mid-April, when the blossoms reach full bloom and the density of the flowers is at its peak. You can enjoy the bright, sunlit scenery during the day, or experience the dramatic atmosphere of the night-time light-up. The seasonal beauty spans from the early budding in late March to the falling petals in mid-April.
Visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll along the scenic paths near the park. Because the trees line a prefectural road, the cherry blossom view is also easily visible while driving through the area, making it a perfect destination for a scenic drive through nature.
The park is located in the Bugegawa area and is approximately a 40-minute drive from Gifu City. The surrounding area is rich in natural beauty, making it an excellent addition to a sightseeing itinerary for Gifu Prefecture or Seki City.
While the park itself is a public space, if you visit nearby facilities or small shops, please note that some may only accept cash. Credit cards may be accepted at larger nearby establishments.
English support (signage or staff) is limited in this area. It is highly recommended to prepare offline maps or translation apps for a smoother experience.
No advanced reservations are required to visit the park. You can enter freely based on the blooming status of the trees.
Temperatures can fluctuate significantly in spring. If you plan to stay for the night-time illumination, we recommend bringing a light jacket or coat to stay warm.
Photography is permitted; however, since the trees are located along a prefectural road, please prioritize safety and stay in designated areas to avoid traffic.
Due to the natural terrain and the fact that the path follows a road, there may be uneven surfaces or slopes. Please check the route if traveling by wheelchair.
As the area involves active vehicle traffic, please be extremely careful when walking. Please also respect the local environment and maintain cleanliness.
