Mt. Tenzan (Tenzan) is a mountain with an elevation of 1,046m, situated in the heart of Saga Prefecture. The area surrounding the summit is designated as a Prefectural Natural Park, and its greatest charm is the vast, flat grassland that stretches approximately 4 kilometers east to west. From this expansive plateau, on a clear day, you can enjoy a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view overlooking Mt. Unzen and the Chikugo Plain. While it is a rich natural environment, the accessibility of certain routes via car makes it a popular and approachable spot for casual hiking and mountain climbing.
The summit of Mt. Tenzan is home to several significant historical remains. Most notably, it contains the grave of Aso Korenaga, a prominent military commander from the Nanboku-cho period. Additionally, a grand stone monument inscribed with "Reiko Tenzan" (Sacred Peak Tenzan) stands near the summit. This monument is of the same type as the "Chinkoku no Yama" bronze monument erected by the calligrapher Nakabayashi Goshiku at the summit of Mt. Fuji in 1898, and it is carefully preserved by Ogi City. Visitors can feel the serene, spiritual atmosphere of the mountain alongside its deep historical roots.
The greatest draw of Mt. Tenzan is the open grassland at the summit and the spectacular views it provides. From spring to autumn, the landscape is filled with clusters of plants such as boxwood and azaleas, offering a vibrant display of natural colors. Along the hiking routes, you will encounter various scenic formations that change as you climb. The summit area is an incredibly open space, making it the perfect location to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and refresh your spirit in the great outdoors.
Mt. Tenzan reveals a different face to visitors throughout the year. From spring to summer, it is a beautiful season to stroll through the lush green grasslands filled with blooming highland plants. Conversely, in winter, the mountain is known for its stunning snowy landscapes. However, please be aware that temperatures at the summit can drop significantly and snow may remain on the paths, so preparation according to the season is essential. Historically, Mt. Tenzan has also been used as a ski resort, highlighting its snowy-mountain side.
Activities at Mt. Tenzan primarily focus on mountain climbing and hiking. There are three main routes, each offering a different experience. For beginners, the "Tenzan Jomon Route" or the "Tenkawa Route" are highly recommended, as they reach the summit in about 30 to 40 minutes with minimal elevation gain, allowing for a light, enjoyable hike. For those seeking a more rigorous and authentic climbing experience, the "Nanakuramitosuge Route" is more suitable. Whether you are wandering through nature or standing atop the peak to witness the panorama, the experience is truly special.
Access to Mt. Tenzan is available via several routes. If traveling by car, the Taku IC or Saga Yamato IC on the Nagasaki Expressway provide smooth access to the trailheads. If using public transportation, you can take a bus from JR Saga Station via the Bus Center and get off at the "Tenzan Miyamae" stop. There are several base points along the trails, such as the Tenkawa Parking Lot and the Tenzan Jomon Parking Lot, depending on which route you choose. After your hike, we also recommend enjoying a scenic drive through the surrounding area.
To ensure a safe and comfortable experience at Mt. Tenzan, please prepare thoroughly. Because some parts of the trails may have steep inclents or become slippery due to rain and mud, wearing appropriate hiking shoes is highly recommended. As temperatures at the summit are much lower than at the base, please dress in layers suitable for the season. Please note that most local services require cash, and we ask that you respect local etiquette and the natural environment by carrying out all your trash and protecting the local flora.
