The Trapesistine Monastery of Our Lady of Angels (also known as Tenshi-en) is a Cistercian monastery located in Kamiyukawa-cho, Hakodate. It was founded in 1898 by nuns dispatched from France. This is a place where the nuns live a life centered on prayer and labor, providing visitors with a profound sense of tranquility and a space for quiet reflection.
The history of this monastery dates back to 1898. It began with the dispatch of eight nuns from the Abbey of Upsi in France, through the efforts of Bishop Berliore of the Paris Foreign Missions Society. Since then, the monastery has continued its mission of Christian evangelization and spiritual life in Hokkaido. Following the Rule of Saint Benedict, the community maintains a tradition of living as cloistered contemplatives, placing great importance on daily prayer and manual labor.
The monastery is filled with historic architecture and artistic elements. A standout feature is the stained glass found in the chapel and the guest dining hall; these windows are modeled after traditional French designs and create a breathtaking visual experience through the play of light. The very structure of the monastery is designed to facilitate a life of prayer within a peaceful, secluded environment.
Visitors typically visit during daylight hours. The reception operates in two shifts: from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM, and from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM. While the sense of serenity is constant regardless of the season, visiting during the daytime allows you to witness the sunlight illuminating the colorful stained glass, creating a magnificent spectacle.
Visitors are welcome to participate in Mass and the Divine Office. This is open to everyone, regardless of religious affiliation. If you are deeply interested in the monastic lifestyle, it is recommended to contact the monastery in advance. It is an ideal place for spiritual rest and introspection away from the noise of modern life.
The monastery is situated in a lush, natural area of Hakodate. Located slightly away from the city center, it offers a quiet environment surrounded by nature. You can easily incorporate a visit here into a broader Hakodate sightseeing itinerary.
As this is a place of prayer, visitors are asked to observe proper etiquette and dress modestly. Please avoid overly revealing clothing and opt for calm, respectful attire.
