Tenri Ginkgo Avenue is a beautiful tree-lined path located along Oji in Tenri City, Nara Prefecture. The avenue features approximately 70 ginkgo trees that turn a brilliant yellow in autumn, creating a spectacular golden tunnel. A highlight of the season is the 'Hokotenri' event held in late November. During this event, the road is transformed into a pedestrian-only zone, allowing visitors to stroll freely through the area without the concern of vehicle traffic and enjoy the golden scenery up close.
The ginkgo trees in this area have long been cherished as street trees. Ginkgo trees are categorized into male and female varieties; the trees planted here are primarily male varieties, which are preferred for street-side planting due to their lower odor. Known for their longevity, these trees change their appearance with the natural cycles of the seasons. As autumn deeps, the scenery along Oji becomes a significant seasonal marker for both local residents and visitors.
