Tenno River Park is a beautiful urban park located in Tsushima City, Aichi Prefecture. The park is centered around the area of the former Tenno River, now known as "Maruike" (Round Pond), offering a lush and natural landscape. It is most famous for its spectacular wisteria blossoms in the spring, which draw visitors from far and wide to witness their incredible beauty. Recognized as one of Japan's 100 Selected Historical Parks, the area provides a healing space where nature and history coexist in perfect harmony.
The history of the park is deeply rooted in the local landscape. Following the drying up of the Saya River in 1899, the area around the "Maruike" pond was developed. A formal proposal for the park's construction was made in 1918, and in 1920, the project received official approval from Aichi Prefecture. Interestingly, the park once had a zoo component; in 1935, monkeys were exhibited, and by 1958, enclosures for lions and bears were established, making it a beloved community landmark. Today, it serves as a peaceful retreat that preserves its natural scenery and historical heritage.
The park features several charming spots. The central "Maruike" pond offers a nostalgic atmosphere that evokes the feeling of the former river flow. The highlight of spring is the magnificent wisteria trellises, which create a cascading curtain of flowers that overwhelms visitors with beauty. Other areas like the lawn plaza, Nakanoshima, and Kuragado each offer unique atmospheres. Additionally, visitors can explore the Old Suzuki Residence, a traditional house built in 1916, providing a glimpse into the lifestyle and culture of old Japan.
The charm of Tenno River Park changes with the seasons. The absolute best time to visit is during the "Wisteria Festival" from late April to early May, when the wisteria is in full bloom and the park is enveloped in a dreamlike atmosphere. In late July, the "Owari Tsushima Tenno Festival" takes place, allowing visitors to experience the vibrant energy of a traditional local festival. During the day, you can enjoy the bright greenery and flowers, while the evening offers a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere as the light fades.
