Tennei-ji is a Soto Zen Buddhist temple located in Higashitsudo-cho, Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Founded in 1367, the temple grounds are home to the Kaiun-to, a three-story pagoda designated as an Important Cultural Property. The view from the pagoda, where the sea and sky blend seamlessly, offers a breathtaking landscape unique to this area. Visitors can also encounter the 500 Arhat statues and the 'Sasuri-butsu' (Hinto-ru statue), a figure beloved by locals and pilgrims for its connection to healing and physical well-being.
The temple was founded in 1367 through the devotion of Doen of Onomichi and a donation from Ashikaga Yoshisa. While it was originally a Rinzai Zen temple, it later transitioned to the Soto Zen sect during the Genroku era. Historical records suggest that the temple once occupied a vast area spanning three blocks, housing a grand complex of seven halls. As a site rich in historical architecture and cultural assets, Tennei-ji serves as a profound testament to the history of Onomichi.
The most iconic sight at Tennei-ji is the three-story pagoda, also known as 'Kaiun-to.' The view of the sea and sky behind the pagoda is considered one of the most representative landscapes of Onomichi. Inside the temple halls, the orderly rows of the 500 Arhat statues provide a striking spiritual atmosphere. Additionally, the Hinto-ru statue located to the left of the main hall is known as 'Sasuri-butsu' (the Rubbing Buddha). It is believed that rubbing the part of your body that is aching or ill on the statue will aid in healing, making it a popular site for prayers for recovery.
To experience the most beautiful seasonal changes, a visit between late March and April is highly recommended. During this period, the temple grounds are adorned with weeping cherry blossoms, white magnolias, and hundreds of blooming peonies. Visiting during bright daylight hours allows for the clearest views of the vibrant colors of the sea and sky through the silhouette of the three-story pagoda.
Tennei-ji hosts regular spiritual activities. Zazen (seated meditation) and sutra chanting sessions are held every Sunday from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 AM to 7:10 AM. These sessions offer a peaceful escape from daily life. Please note that participation in these events requires a prior reservation via telephone.
Tennei-ji is situated along the popular sightseeing routes of Onomichi, near other famous temples like Senko-ji. From certain vantage points near the temple gate, you can see a beautiful integrated view of the temple buildings, the three-story pagoda, and the surrounding hills, showcasing the unique topography of the region. The temple is within walking distance from Onomichi Station or easily accessible by bus.
