Tenjin Meoto Sakura is a breathtaking spot located in Nishida-machi, Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture, where two massive wild cherry trees (Yamazakura) stand side-by-side. Both trees are estimated to be approximately 500 years old, and their proximity gives them the appearance of a devoted couple, hence the name 'Meoto Sakura' (Married Couple Sakura). In spring, the scene is a vibrant tapestry of colors: the white-pink cherry blossoms are complemented by the bright yellow of rapeseed flowers below and the deep pink of surrounding peach blossoms, all set against a clear blue sky. It is a place where nature and local culture blend seamlessly.
The site is home to a small shrine dedicated to 'Tenjin-sama,' the deity of learning, Sugawara no Michizane. Legend says that plum and cherry trees were planted during the shrine's establishment, making this a long-standing site of local faith. The two trees are personified as a couple: the tree on the east side has gracefully drooping branches, characteristic of a 'shidarezakura' (weeping cherry), representing the 'wife,' while the tree on the west side has more upright branches, representing the 'husband.'
The greatest draw is the sight of these two giant Yamazakura trees. Depending on your angle, the silhouette of the two trees can even resemble a heart shape. The contrast between the pink blossoms, the yellow rapeseed flowers, and the pink peach blossoms creates a truly spectacular landscape. During the night, the trees are illuminated, offering a mystical and ethereal atmosphere that differs greatly from the daytime view.
The peak viewing season is typically from early to mid-April. If you visit when the cherry blossoms, peach blossoms, and rapeseed flowers are all in full bloom, you can enjoy a luxurious, multi-colored landscape. We recommend visiting during the day to capture the colors under a bright blue sky, or during the evening for the illuminated light-up sessions. The site is open 24 hours, allowing you to experience its different moods at any time.
Beyond admiring the natural beauty, this is an excellent spot for photography. A popular technique is to use a wide-angle lens and focus on the foreground to create a sense of depth, leading the eye toward the blossoms. For those interested in local culture, a visit to the nearby 'Takashiba Deco Yashiki' allows you to experience traditional crafts and local heritage.
