Tenchi Shrine is a serene spiritual site located in Hirai, Nanbu Town, Shizuoka Prefecture. Its most striking feature is the magnificent Great Camphor Tree (Kusunoki), which is officially designated as a Natural Monument of Shizuoka Prefecture. This colossal tree boasts a trunk circumference of 13.5m, a root circumference of 30m, and a height of approximately 51.5m. It is ranked 38th in Japan among giant trees based on trunk circumference. The shrine grounds are well-maintained, offering a peaceful environment to witness the breathtaking beauty of natural architecture.
The shrine has long served as a spiritual center for the local community. The ancient camphor tree residing within the precincts is estimated to be 800 years old, serving as a living symbol of the region's natural history. While Shizuoka is home to many large trees, this specific camphor tree is the 4th largest in the prefecture by trunk circumference and was officially designated as a Shizuoka Prefectural Natural Monument on April 1, 1952. Tenchi Shrine is open 24 hours a day with no specific gate closing times.
