Lake Tazawa, located in Akita Prefecture, is the deepest lake in Japan, reaching a depth of 423.4 meters. Its nearly circular shape and breathtakingly clear blue water—often described as a brilliant lapis lazuli—create a stunning landscape against the surrounding mountains. Recognized as one of the "100 Best Lakes in Japan" in 2022, the area offers a mystical atmosphere where natural beauty meets ancient legends.
The area is steeped in the legend of Princess Tatsuko, a local folklore that adds a layer of mystery to the landscape. The Tatsuko Statue, a prominent symbol of the lake, commemorates this story. Scattered along the shores are various historical sites and shrines, reflecting a deep connection between the local people, their spiritual beliefs, and the natural environment.

There is much to explore around the lake. Iconic landmarks like the Gozaishi Shrine and the Tatsuko Statue are perfectly integrated into the scenery. Visitors can enjoy driving along the scenic lakeside roads, cycling, or visiting local parks and campsites. For a truly immersive experience, take a sightseeing boat cruise to see the mountains from a different perspective.
The scenery changes beautifully with every season. Spring brings the contrast of clear waters and blooming cherry blossoms. Summer offers a vibrant blue surface reflecting the bright sun amidst lush greenery. Autumn transforms the landscape with fiery red and yellow foliage reflecting on the lake. In winter, the area takes on a serene, ethereal quality with snow-covered landscapes.

Lake Tazawa offers a wide range of activities. A sightseeing boat cruise provides a 360-degree panoramic view of the lake. For those seeking more active adventures, you can enjoy cycling, SUP (stand-up paddleboarding), canoeing, or kayaking. Newer ways to enjoy the area include electric kickboards and even tent sailing or tent saunas for a unique way to connect with nature.
The area is also famous for its incredible hot spring culture. The nearby Nyuto Onsenkyo, nestled within a primeval beech forest, offers several traditional inns with diverse water qualities. Mizusawa Onsenkyo is another accessible and popular option. After exploring the lake, these hot springs are the perfect way to relax and rejuvenate.

Preparation is key depending on your activities. For summer boat trips or water sports, bring sun protection and light layers. For winter or early spring, heavy warm clothing is essential. While many facilities and boat services accept credit cards, it is always wise to have cash on hand for smaller local spots. Please respect the natural environment by taking your trash with you and following local etiquette.
