The Taushubetsu River Bridge is a concrete arch bridge located in Lake Nukabira, Kamishihoro Town, Hokkaido. Originally part of the former National Railway Shihoro Line, this bridge was left behind in the lake due to a change in the railway route caused by dam construction. Its most striking feature is how its appearance changes dramatically depending on the season and water levels controlled for power generation. During periods of high water, much of the bridge is submerged, while during low water periods, its entire structure can be seen. This unpredictable nature has earned it the nickname the 'Phantom Bridge.' Additionally, on clear, calm days, the reflection of the arch on the water's surface resembles a pair of spectacles, leading it to be called the 'Megane Bridge' (Spectacles Bridge).
This bridge once served as a vital part of the National Railway Shihoro Line. Constructed in 1939, it was a concrete arch bridge spanning the Taushubetsu River, a tributary of the Otokuni River. However, as the construction of the Nukabira Dam progressed to facilitate hydroelectric power generation, the surrounding area was slated to be submerged. Consequently, in 1955, the railway route was diverted, and the bridge completed its service only 16 years after its opening. While the tracks were removed, the bridge itself remains standing in the middle of the lake. This historic structure has been designated as a Hokkaido Heritage site, serving as a precious piece of local history.
The greatest highlight is the changing expression of the bridge driven by natural cycles. Because the submerged area varies with the water level, you will experience a different landscape every time you visit. The sight of the arch reflecting on the water's surface amidst the silent lakeside scenery is particularly breathtaking. The contrast between the industrial texture of the concrete and the surrounding lush, wild nature creates a unique atmosphere found only in this part of Hokkaido.
The appearance of the Taushubetsu River Bridge varies significantly by season. If you wish to see the bridge more clearly, it is important to check the water levels in advance, as the bridge is more visible during low-water periods. The impression of the landscape also changes with the weather and time of day. For instance, on calm mornings with no wind or during the golden hour of sunset, the reflection on the lake is exceptionally beautiful and mystical. Please note that during winter, access via forest roads may be restricted due to a lack of snow removal.
There are three main ways to experience the bridge. The easiest method is to view it from the 'Taushubetsu Observation Deck,' located about 8km from Nukabira Onsen. From here, you can view the bridge from a distance of approximately 750 meters. For a closer look at the structure, you can join a paid guided tour organized by the NPO Higashidaisetsu Nature Guide Center. Another option is to drive through the forest road to reach the site, but this requires borrowing a key for the forest road gate at 'Michi-no-Eki Kamishihoro.' Please check the specific rules and requirements for forest road access in advance.
Near the Taushubetsu River Bridge, you can enjoy the hot springs of Nukabira Onsen. Nearby accommodations such as Nukabira Kan Kanko Hotel, Sankoso, and Yumotokan allow you to rest in a beautiful natural environment. Additionally, in the town of Kamishihoro, the 'Kamishihoro Railway Museum' is an excellent spot to visit to deepen your understanding of the railway history behind the bridge.
