Tatsuzawa Fudotaki Falls is a stunning waterfall located in Inawashiro Town, Fukushima Prefecture, fed by the Fudo River originating from the Mt. Adatara mountain range. It is celebrated as one of the "Inawashiro New Eight Scenic Views" and is also featured in the "30 Selected Waters of Fukushima." The waterfall is famous for its two distinct personalities: the powerful "Odaki" (Male Falls), which measures 10m in height and 16m in width, and the elegant "Medaki" (Female Falls) located to its west. The way the water cascades down the rock face like a bamboo blind (sudare) showcases both the strength and the delicacy of nature.
At the base of the falls, the Fudo Myoo deity has been enshrined since ancient times. This site has long been cherished by local communities as a place where the raw power of nature meets spiritual tranquility. The surrounding area is a lush, primary forest, maintaining an environment that inspires deep respect for the natural world.
The greatest highlight is the contrasting scenery between Odaki and Medaki. While Odaki displays a grand and vigorous presence as water spreads across the rock face, Medaki offers a more serene and quiet presence. Additionally, because Odaki faces south, visitors may witness the magical phenomenon of a rainbow appearing in the mist during certain times of the day and weather conditions. Seeing a rainbow at the falls is a truly precious moment for any traveler.
The waterfall offers a different face in every season. From spring to summer, the lush greenery creates a striking contrast with the white cascading water. In autumn, the surrounding foliage turns vibrant colors, providing a colorful backdrop to the falls. For the best experience, visiting on a bright, sunny day during the daytime is highly recommended, as this increases the chances of seeing a rainbow in the water spray.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll while observing the natural landscape. The area around the falls is home to an enshrined Fudo deity, allowing you to walk through a space where nature and spirituality are one. The paths are well-maintained, allowing you to feel the power of the falls up close. The site is also located near the Nakanosawa Onsen area, making it an excellent addition to a travel itinerary that combines hot springs with nature exploration.
The area is surrounded by rich natural beauty. After visiting the falls, you can relax at the nearby Nakanosawa Onsen. Furthermore, the Inawashiro area features many other attractions, such as Mt. Bandai, making this an ideal base for exploring the natural scenery of Fukushima. The walk from the parking lot to the waterfall takes approximately 10 minutes through a natural forest path.
As this is a natural site, paths may be damp or uneven. We highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Since water spray can reach the viewing areas, it is wise to wear clothing that can handle moisture or bring a light waterproof layer.
