The history of this region dates back to the 16th century, beginning when the Akamatsu clan built a castle atop Mt. Kekosan. Later, during the Edo period, the castle was moved to the plain at the foot of the mountain, leading to the development of the castle town. Under the stable rule of the Wakizaka clan for approximately 200 years starting in the late 17th century, the region flourished.

Tatsuno also served as a vital hub for water transport along the Ibo River, fostering local industries such as soy sauce brewing and somen noodle production. While parts of the former castle site were used as a prison and school during the Meiji era, the area today focuses on preserving and reconstructing its historical landscape as a local symbol.
