Tatsukaeshi Falls is located in Nagakura Kose, Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture. The waterfall has a drop of approximately 10 meters and is situated along the main stream of the Yu River. Because the water flows through a narrow opening, the descent is incredibly powerful and dramatic. Compared to the more famous Shiraito Falls, this spot offers a much more tranquil and peaceful environment for observing nature.
The name of the falls is tied to a legend from the mid-Meiji era. It is said that a massive, serpent-like dragon attempted to cross the Yu River but was swept away by the intense force of the waterfall, disappearing into the basin below. This legend gave rise to the name "Tatsukaeshi," which implies the power to even turn back a dragon. The waterfall is also sometimes called "Suzu-ga-taki" because the way the water swirls into the circular basin resembles a string of beads.
The main attraction is the powerful rush of water plunging from the narrow mouth of the falls into the basin. While the 10-meter drop is not exceptionally high, the volume of water creates a striking, roaring effect. The sight of the water swirling into the deep, circular basin is a unique feature of this location. You can also enjoy the contrast between the intense waterfall and the calm, gentle waters downstream.

In October, you can witness the beautiful contrast between the waterfall and the autumn foliage. Since the site is accessible 24 hours a day, you can visit at any time that suits your schedule.

The famous Shiraito Falls is located in the nearby area. If you are driving from the direction of Shiraito Falls, please note that the entrance to the parking area can be somewhat difficult to spot, so it is recommended to check your route in advance.

There are no fees for visiting this site, and no specific information regarding English-language signage is provided. No reservations are required, and the area is accessible 24 hours a day.
