Tatodohama Beach, located in Shimoda City, Shizuoka Prefecture, is a breathtaking destination famous for its crystal-clear waters and pristine white sand. The sea displays a stunning gradient from emerald green to deep blue, captivating every visitor. The water quality is exceptionally high (rated AA), so clear that you can easily see the rocks and sand on the seabed. It is widely recognized as a premier spot for surfing and bodyboarding, serving as a major hub for the surfing community where even national-level competitions are held.
The area has long been blessed with a rich natural environment. Much like the other iconic coastlines around Shimoda, this beach has been cherished for its scenic beauty. Today, it has established itself as a renowned resort destination for water sports, attracting a wide range of enthusiasts from beginners to seasoned professionals. There is a deep-rooted culture of enjoying marine leisure while maintaining a profound respect for the natural landscape.
The most striking feature is the incredible water transparency. The sight of white foam washing against the translucent emerald green sea creates a tropical resort atmosphere. The 450-meter stretch of beautiful white sand, framed by lush green hills, makes it a highly photogenic spot perfect for photography. Additionally, dedicated surfing areas allow you to witness the dynamic energy of the waves up close.
The peak season for swimming and beach activities is typically from mid-July to late August. July and August are the best months to enjoy the bright blue skies and sparkling ocean. During the daytime, the water transparency is at its peak, making it the ideal time for marine sports. Visiting during the summer holiday period allows you to experience the vibrant and energetic atmosphere of the beach (Open 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM).
Surfing and bodyboarding are the main attractions here. The waves cater to various skill levels, from beginners to experts. There are several local shops nearby that offer surfing lessons and equipment, making it an excellent environment for children or anyone looking to try their hand at surfing for the first time. The area around Tatodohama Beach is lined with various resort hotels and accommodations, allowing visitors to enjoy a seamless transition from beach activities to a relaxing stay. You will also find various activity shops nearby for renting gear or taking professional lessons.
To enjoy the beach, we recommend bringing swimwear, a hat, sandals, and sun protection. The beach is equipped with essential facilities such as paid shower stations (300 JPY) and changing rooms. Parking is available for approximately 2,000 JPY per day (capacity: 110 cars). Please remember to take your trash home with you and follow local etiquette to preserve the beautiful natural environment.
