Tachimata Gorge
9 min readOverview & Attractions
Tachimata Gorge (Tachimata Keikoku) is a magnificent canyon located at the western foot of Mt. Moriyoshi in Kitaakita City, Akita Prefecture. The gorge is characterized by a dramatic 300m vertical drop. The most striking feature is the dynamic landscape shaped by nature, where vertical rock walls showcase unique columnar jointing. The sight of numerous waterfalls cascading down these cliffs is truly overwhelming. The route through the various waterfalls—including Ichinotaki, Nino-taki, and the massive 108m Kohei-daki—offers a precious opportunity to feel the raw energy of nature firsthand.
History & Cultural Background
This region has long been blessed with a rich natural environment. The nearby Mt. Moriyoshi is famous for its harsh yet beautiful environment, known for being one of Japan's three major frost tree (Juhyo) locations in winter. Tachimata Gorge preserves its natural beauty in its original form, serving as a significant local natural heritage site. The surrounding landscape reflects a history of coexistence between humans and nature, with traces of old pathways and traditional culture still felt in the air.

Main Highlights
The gorge features three distinct waterfalls, each offering a different perspective of the canyon's beauty:
- *Ichinotaki (First Waterfall)**: Located about a 10-minute walk from the parking area, this 38m drop flows alongside striking columnar jointing. You can feel the power of the water very closely.
- *Ninotaki (Second Waterfall)**: A beautiful 20m waterfall encountered as you continue along the path from Ichinotaki. Its stepped structure creates a very graceful flow of water.
- *Koheidaki (Kohei Waterfall)**: The highlight of the gorge, this massive 108m waterfall plunges down the slope of a beech forest. The sheer force of the water is a breathtaking symbol of nature's power.
Best Seasons & Timing
Tachimata Gorge reveals a different face with every season, but the most recommended times are during the fresh greenery of spring/summer and the vibrant colors of autumn. From June to September, the refreshing sound of water and lush greenery make it an ideal destination for escaping the heat. Please note that from mid-November to late May, the roads and paths are closed due to heavy snow, making travel impossible during winter. For the best experience, visit during midday when sunlight reflects off the waterfalls, creating a shimmering effect perfect for photography.

Activities & Experience
The primary activity here is hiking through nature. The course starting from Ichinotaki, passing through Nino-taki, and ending at the grand Kohei-daki is a visually stunning route that showcases the artistry of geological formations. Walking through the beech forests also provides a wonderful opportunity for forest bathing (Shinrin-yoku) to refresh your mind and body. However, because some paths can be unstable, sturdy hiking shoes are highly recommended.
Surrounding Areas
There are several other attractive spots near Tachimata Gorge. For example, Mt. Moriyoshi is a famous mountain for enjoying alpine plants in summer and frost trees in winter. The area is also relatively accessible via transport hubs like Odate-Noshi Airport and the Akita Nairiku Line. You can fully enjoy the natural beauty of Akita by visiting the nearby Ani district or the scenic KomatakyĹŤ Gorge.

What to Bring, Clothing & Etiquette
Preparation is key when hiking in a natural environment. Since paths can be wet or rocky, please wear non-slip, sturdy shoes and comfortable clothing. As weather can change rapidly, consider bringing rain gear and warm layers. As this is a habitat for Asian black bears, carrying a bear bell is a highly effective safety measure. Please respect the environment by taking all your trash home and following local conservation rules.
