The Tatsuta-bu-ta Museum is a cultural landmark located in Goshogawara City, Aomori Prefecture. Its primary purpose is the permanent exhibition and preservation of the Goshogawara Nebuta (giant upright floats). Here, visitors can stand directly beneath these massive, towering structures to appreciate their overwhelming scale and exquisite craftsmanship up close.
Since the revival of the Tatsuta-bu-ta tradition, the city of Goshogawara has focused on regional revitalization through this spectacular festival. This facility serves as a vital hub for the production and storage of these giant floats. During the festival season, the massive Nebuta displayed here are prepared for their grand appearance, playing a crucial role in supporting the local traditions and community spirit.
The highlight of the museum is the Tatsuta-bu-ta Exhibition Room. Because a new giant Nebuta is crafted every year, the museum always displays three massive floats—the current year's creation, the previous year's, and the one from two years prior. This offers a rare opportunity to view such immense structures and their incredibly detailed, colorful designs from a very close perspective. Additionally, the second floor features an Art Gallery showcasing works by artists with deep ties to the local region.
While the museum offers exhibitions year-round, visiting during the summer festival season (July and August) allows you to feel the intense energy of the festival more deeply. Please note that operating hours may change depending on the season. For example, from October to March, the closing time is earlier at 17:00. Beyond just viewing, the museum allows you to learn about the technical and cultural background of the festival. In the exhibition room, you can visually understand the complex engineering and craftsmanship required to build and store these massive floats.
