Mount Tarumae is an active volcano standing at 1,041 meters, located south of Lake Shikotsu in the southern part of Hokkaido's central region. Its most striking feature is its rare "triple-cone" volcanic structure. Near the summit, you will find a scientifically precious lava dome (lava dome cap) that is designated as a natural monument of Hokkaido. The hiking trails are relatively well-maintained, and the ascent from the Nanagome parking lot to the summit takes only about 50 minutes, making it a popular destination for travelers looking for a high-quality hiking experience in a short amount of time.
The formation of Mount Tarumae dates back approximately 9,000 years of volcanic activity. The mountain's current unique topography was shaped through a process of several eruptions separated by a long dormant period of about 6,500 years. The name is believed to originate from the Ainu word "Taromai," meaning "the high place by the river" or "that which is there." This suggests the name may have originally referred to the mountain's role as a water source for the rivers flowing at its base. Locally known as "Tarumai-san," the mountain has been deeply intertwined with the local natural environment for centuries.

The stunning blue of Lake Shikotsu spreading below, paired with the majestic expanse of the Pacific Ocean in the distance, is truly breathtaking.
