Tarumae Garrow is a stunning canyon located at the foot of Mount Tarumae in Tomakomai, Hokkaido. It is officially designated as a Natural Conservation Area. The most striking feature is the unique landscape created by the steep rock walls draped in thick, deep green moss. This mossy texture is often described as a "velvet carpet," offering a profound sense of nature's sculptural beauty.
To protect its precious ecosystem, the area was designated as a municipal Natural Conservation Area in 1979. For many years, this site has been carefully preserved to maintain its rich biodiversity and breathtaking scenery. The surrounding forests serve as a vital habitat for local wildlife, making it a place where visitors can feel the powerful yet delicate balance of the natural world.
The most spectacular view is seen looking down into the canyon from the bridge. The contrast between the sheer rock faces and the light filtering down to the deep riverbed creates a mesmerizing visual experience. June is particularly special; during this early summer season, the sunlight penetrates deep into the canyon, making the water surface and the moss-covered rocks shimmer brilliantly.
The best time to visit is from May to August when the fresh greenery is most vibrant. June is highly recommended, as the angle of the sunlight enhances the beauty of the landscape. Regarding timing, it is strongly advised to avoid entering the area during early morning or evening, as these are the times when wildlife, such as brown bears, are most active. Visiting during bright daylight hours ensures both a safer experience and the clearest views.
Visitors primarily enjoy nature observation from the bridge and walking paths. Please note that while visitors could once descend into the river, this is now strictly prohibited to prevent accidents due to potential rockfalls. From the safety of the bridge, you can enjoy a tranquil moment observing the 6-meter-high cliffs, the mossy textures, and the clear mountain stream.
The area around the canyon features several spots to enjoy Hokkaido's natural landscapes. There are also various routes to explore the surrounding forests and areas that share the same status as a natural conservation zone.
As this is a rugged natural environment, sturdy walking shoes and practical outdoor clothing are highly recommended. Since this is a brown bear habitat, please remain vigilant.
